KLAUS JOHANN GROBE + VINYL WILLIAMS WITH WET DREAM

$12 / 21+ / 9 pm LOSE YR MIND presents:

Klaus Johann Grobe
Swiss group Klaus Johann Grobe have been at it since 2012, and as they prepare to release their third album "Du Bist So Symmetrisch" (and third on Trouble In Mind), the group continues to defy description & blur the lines between electronic pop, dance music, synthesis & kosmische.

"Du Bist So Symmetrisch" follows the inevitable path laid out by their previous album (the Basel Prize-winning "Spagat der Liebe"), incorporating the slinky, jazz-fusion-laced grooves populating late night clubs and braiding them together with the band's own blend of mutant electro-funk. Driven by an organic, metronomic beat aligned with synth, chant-like vocals, and a monstrous funky bass, the music aims towards a certain kind of hypnosis, particularly as the sleeping pill echo-heavy vocals cycle over the locked grooves the pair throw down. "Du Bist..." begins with the cascading arpeggio of a synth, edging into view, before lurching into the placid dancefloor groove of the first single "Discogedanken". While the band invariably feels more at home in the club, Klaus Johann Grobe certainly aim towards the more dance-orientated arena of German music (see "Der König" or "Von Gestern"), aligning the metro pulse of Klaus Dinger and Kraftwerk's later techno work to more biological factors - like moss growing on the mainframe.

The band has toured extensively since 2014, highlights being supporting tours with Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Growlers and Temples, and they have toured and played festivals in the U.S.A., U.K., Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, France and Spain. Their latest album, "Du Bist So Symmetrisch" was released worldwide by Trouble in Mind Records on October 26th, 2019 on Digital, CD, and LP.

Vinyl Williams
The rare history of harmonious pop music imbued in Vinyl Williams's Opal LP is finally coming to the conscious surface in the warped form of a celestial hyper-coaster, combining sunshine pop, afrobeat, and progressive rock into a dense emanation of sonic optics. The California native has attuned his sound palette to the cosmic quintessence – opalescent tones that harmonize chaos, synchronizing a global family of celestial harmonies into a macrocosmic epicenter.

Dressy Bessy with Potty Mouth & Colleen Green

$12 ADV + $15 DOS / 21+ / 9pm LOSE YR MIND presents:

Dressy Bessy
20 years after their first release, Dressy Bessy returns with Fast Faster Disaster, their second album on Yep Roc. Lyrically and sonically, the band remains true to their sound with catchy indie pop/punk hooks and sharp lyrics wrought with intense joy and deep sadness.

Potty Mouth

Colleen Green
This latest collection of songs follows a newly 30-year-old Green as she carefully navigates a minefield of emotion. Her firm belief in true love is challenged by the inner turmoil caused by entering modern adulthood, but that doesn’t mean that her faith is defeated. With a nod to her heroes, sentimental SoCal punks The Descendents, Green too wonders what it will be like when she gets old. Throughout songs such as “Some People,” “Deeper Than Love,” and the illustrative title track, the listener has no choice but to feel the sympathetic growing pains of revelatory maturation and the anxieties that come along with it.

Hibou with Bryson Cone & Anomelea

$10 / 21+ / 9pm LOSE YR MIND presents:

Hibou
Amidst an atmosphere of melancholia, Peter Michel has thrown himself into a lifetime’s worth of writing, recording and touring belied by his young age. At just 17, the Seattle-based musician toured extensively with dream pop outfit Craft Spells, and most recently met critical acclaim with his personal project, Hibou. In ‘Halve', Hibou's third full length album, Michel creates a characteristically ethereal record addressing the dichotomies confronting every young adult in the 21st century: the division between childhood and adulthood, self and society, authenticity and superficiality. But Michel brings these themes additional intensity due to his history of dissociative depersonalization disorder: his mind's frequent inability to feel connected with his body. “Alone I am weak to the breakers / they bring every column down in a reckless desire” he sings in 'As Always'. The struggle to latch on to his experiences, both present and past, manifests in obsessive control over the complex but precisely layered melodies on the album, in which he produces, plays every instrument, and mixes every song. The outcome is a work filled with swooning, hazy reflections on loss, love, nostalgia, and joy from a 10,000 foot view. It pleads for you to stay in the moment while planting the seed that you will likely lose this memory as it slips into a misty wistfulness.

The result is not sad—in fact, it's often light and embracing. Michel's vocals comfortably twist from echoing whispers to punkish accusations; his guitar from dizzying surf hooks to lush 80s-inspired chords. Control—and the lack of it—reverberates throughout the album, and the ironic consequence is a set of ten deeply vulnerable songs that will find you romanticizing your own childhood, your own teenage years, your own morning. These days, Michel keeps fastidious handwritten journals and hoards VHS tapes from his childhood in order to keep himself grounded— haunting excerpts from these videos bookend the album. "Just be pure, alive, and self assured,” Michel repeats towards the end of the album. It seems as much a request for the world as a reminder to himself: this is within my control. This I can promise. His music is a testament to fixation as a cure for apathy, and the fantasies that emerge from a mind unmoored.

Mauno & Jo Passed (solo)

21+ / 9pm LOSE YR MIND presents:

Mauno
Really Well, the new record from Halifax band Mauno, is an expansive, idiosyncratic study in the creases in intimacy, authenticity, and labor, and the ways that music--guitars, bass, drums, synths and vocals--- can explore and express them. Written by vocalist/bassist Eliza Niemi, vocalist/guitarist Nick Everett, guitarist Scott Boudreau and drummer Adam White and recorded at Chad VanGaalen's Calgary studio, the record collapses the personal and the professional within critiques of capitalism and creative labour.

jo passed
The nicest thing anyone has ever – ever – said to Jo Hirabayashi, frontman of Jo Passed, is that his band’s debut album sounds like “fucked-up Beatles”. Titled Their Prime, the LP does sound like fucked-up Beatles. It sounds like, somewhere across an ‘80s universe, Lennon and McCartney discovered Can and Neu!, and maybe a little Sonic Youth and XTC along the way. Opening with “Left,” it demonstrates that timeless knack for dreamy melodies – chord progressions that sound like they were created in a land far far away. Lyrically, however, it’s imbued with a philosophical longing for answers to questions that have resurfaced for the first time since the explosion of counterculture in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Sego’s 2nd long player Sego Sucks is woven with the changes of becoming a four-piece band. Originally Spencer Petersen and Thomas Carroll, the band added members Alyssa Davey on bass and Brandon McBride on guitars and keys in 2018. The sound became more focused, but the raucous spirit that has kept people sweating since the beginning is just as tangible and, dare I say, primal as ever.

Shy Boys
Hailed as “The Beach Boys on Robitussin”, Shy Boys – DIY champions of Kansas City, MO, are comprised of brothers Collin and Kyle Rausch and best friends Konnor Ervin, Kyle Little and Ross Brown. Their album, Bell House, was released August 2018 on Polyvinyl. The album’s title is taken from the band’s beloved headquarters – the old house on Bell Street in Kansas City where they lived together for the better part of 5 years.

The Fur Coats
The Fur Coats are a groovy soul pop sextet based in Portland, Oregon. Co-fronted by saxophone sweethearts Chris Karl and Betty, their all-star lineup includes former members of Reptaliens, Charlie Hilton, and a litany of other Portland rock & roll barnstormers. Theirs is an extremely tight-knit collective — at their inception, most of them lived together in a haunted mansion in North Portland (several still keep an address there, and they continue to use its basement as band nerve center) — and that intense closeness is clear in both their writing and performance.

SOLD OUT / 21+ / 9pm LOSE YR MIND presents:

Träd, Gräs och Stenar
They were from Sweden, they were pioneers of DIY culture, they jammed with force and purpose for 40 minutes back when “legendary” SF groups or German kraut rock bands were still struggling to get out of the upper single digits with dignity; they traveled with organic food they grew themselves, and cooked for everyone they played to; they made their own instruments, amplifiers and PAs before there was such a thing as a PA; they released records themselves, y’know back when the Dead were still on a major label.

Parker Gispert (of The Whigs) + Rum River Cult

9pm / 21+ / $8

Parker Gispert
Parker Gispert was still in college when he helped form the Whigs in the early 2000s. But after five critically-acclaimed albums, hundreds of tour dates all over the world with the likes of Kings of Leon, Drive-By Truckers, the Black Keys and many others, and television appearances everywhere from the Late Show with David Letterman to Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Athens, Georgia-bred rockers decided to pull back on activity in 2017.

Which left Gispert, who had spent the majority of his adult life either in the studio or on the road with the band, at a crossroads.

“It occurred to me that if I wanted to record and tour that I was going to need to do it solo,” the singer, songwriter and guitarist says. “I'd always thought about it in the back of my mind as something that I wanted to do one day, but ‘one day’ had never really come.”

Now, ‘one day’ is here in the form of Sunlight Tonight , Gispert’s debut solo album (produced and mixed by Emery Dobyns). The eight-song effort finds Gispert, known for leading the Whigs through raw and jangly southern-garage rave-ups, taking a decidedly different musical approach—biting electric guitar riffs are cast out in favor of gentle acoustic picking and strumming, and his band mates’ raucous rhythms are traded in for minimal accompaniment that includes light bass and drums, orchestral strings and even trumpet. Gispert’s lyrics, meanwhile, are his most introspective and personal to date (albeit with a bit of humor thrown in here and there) and they’re delivered in a vocal style that finds him pushing out on his range. “I didn't need to project over a band, so I was able to sing in registers I hadn’t really used before, like a lot of high falsetto,” he explains.

Quinn DeVeaux with MD Sharbatz (of Brownish Black)

9pm / 21+ / $8

Quinn DeVeaux
Quinn DeVeaux spent his early childhood living with his grandmother, a former jazz singer, twenty-five miles outside of Chicago in Gary, Indiana. The birthplace of the Jackson 5 had long since slipped into post-industrial economic decline and the ambitious DeVeaux, while still a teenager, headed west with just a guitar and a golden voice. Eventually he found his way to San Francisco, CA where he was a founding member of
the Blue Roots, a short-lived but near mythic group that operated out of the Mission District at the turn of the millennium. Alongside DeVeaux, the group included Lech Wierzynski and Nansamba Ssensalo, the pair who would go on to form the California
Honeydrops, and bassist Nate Brenner of the Tune-Yards. Quinn would release a string of well regarded albums in the ensuing years, garnering accolades from the Bay Area music press and gathering fans on the dance floors at his high energy and “joyous” live
shows. Rock critic Ian S. Port praised DeVeaux for “distill[ing] decades of American blues, country, soul, and gospel into a funky sound that feels as authentic as it does refreshing.

PEARL CHARLES at THE LIQUOR STORE

9pm / $8 / 21+ / LOSE YR MIND presents:

Pearl Charles
Pearl Charles lives in the moment, seeking excitement whether it leads her down a dark, dusty road or into the arms of a trouble-making lover. Her full-length debut album, Sleepless Dreamer, describes late night revelry, love affairs, running away and running towards, serenading the sunrise through whirlwind stories of her native Los Angeles, the city, the canyon, the desert, and the road. On a quest to discover the truest version of herself, Charles embraces the feeling of not being settled, a person who always restlessly wants more from life and is willing chase it, wherever it may lead her.

Sleepless Dreamer finds her soulful, often sultry voice gliding through songs tinged with cosmic Americana, a little disco, some classic rock & roll, and a whole lot of that smooth AM gold. Passion, psychedelics and heartbreak inform the highs and lows she rides through the album. Finally able to see clearly through the smoke and mirrors of her surroundings, Charles departs on a consequent journey of questioning and soul-searching, eventually hitting the road in the inevitable search for answers.

Mothers
Mothers began in 2013 as self-taught songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kristine Leschper’s solo project as she studied printmaking in Athens, Georgia. Leschper's earliest musical influences span a great swath of early aughts rock and folk including Interpol, Sufjan Stevens, Joanna Newsom, The Microphones, and Athens legends Neutral Milk Hotel; she later developed a love for experimental music, math rock, and noise artists as well. Over time, Leschper began collaborating with fellow Athenian Matthew Anderegg and a fully flushed out band soon fell into place. In 2016, Mothers released their debut album “When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired” to great critical acclaim. Named a Stereogum ‘Band To Watch’, Pitchfork’s review of the album compared Leschper to Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten while Noisey exclaimed that the record “is singer-songwriter prog rock for grown up emo kids.” Now based in Philadelphia, Mothers will spend 2018 working on their sophomore follow-up.

AVI BUFFALO + HAUNTED SUMMER at THE LIQUOR STORE

9pm / 21+ / $8 ADV / $10 DOS / LOSE YR MIND presents:

Avi Buffalo
Ah, yes, age—much was made of it when Avi Buffalo’s first album hit the ground running, and for good reason: While his Millikan High School classmates were preoccupied with quaint and youthful pursuits, Avi Buffalo was busy making an off-kilter pop gem that eventually bowled over NME, The AV Club, Pitchfork, the BBC, and numerous other outlets on both sides of the Atlantic whose tastes are respected by the general public. Like a lot of kids his age, Avi celebrated the end of high school in Europe, but instead of visiting the Louvre and Buckingham Palace, their overseas journeys took them to the festival stages of Reading, Leeds, Glastonbury, the Pavement-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties in Minehead, and beyond. Buffalo is ready to take on the world (again), armed with all of the experience he’s compiled over the past few years. And he’s made sure this time around will be just as memorable as the first.

Haunted Summer
The songs of Haunted Summer are dreamy and hypnotic, rich with orchestral strings and sultry electronic textures. With their previous EP, Something in the Water, the group crafted a captivating, ethereal musical journey through a nostalgic world of young love and long-forgotten memories. Consisting of husband-and-wife Bridgette Moody and John Seasons, who share songwriting duties in a true collaboration, the Los Angeles duo have shared the stage and toured with groups and performers including Taken By Trees, Islands, Deafheaven‬, The Polyphonic Spree‬, Coeur De Pirate, Olafur Arnalds, Carla Morrison‬, Meiko, Basia Bulat‬, Geographer, David J of Bauhaus and more. Their debut full-length, Spirit Guides (released on Sept 29th), was written on the road as well as recorded in several studios including Rancho de la Luna in Joshua Tree, Jim Henson Studios in Hollywood, Comp-ny LA, and studios owned by Ninkasi Brewing in Eugene, Oregon. It features an array of talented musicians, including (but not limited to!) Dave Catching‬ from Eagles of Death Metal‬ and Chris Goss‬ from Masters of Reality (both of whom are on the title track).
